Organisation of Football in Brazil

The organisation of football in Brazil is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or face relegation based on their performances. This structure is divided into several levels, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Série A, which is the highest level of Brazilian football. It brings together 20 professional clubs that compete for the title of Brazilian champion. The bottom four teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Série B, which also comprises 20 clubs. The top four teams from this division are promoted to Série A, while the bottom four descend to the Série C.

The Série C, the third tier, hosts 20 teams, mostly semi-professional. The top four teams are promoted to Série B, and the bottom four are relegated to the Série D. This level is subdivided into eight groups of 17 clubs each, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with Série C and the Série E.

The Série E, the fifth level of Brazilian football, is organised into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond Série E, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Brazilian football at all levels of competition.
