Organisation of Football in Japan

The organisation of football in Japan is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performances. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the J1 League, which is the highest level of Japanese football. It comprises 20 professional clubs vying for the title of Japan's champion. The bottom three teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the J2 League, which also includes 22 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the J1 League, while the bottom four descend to the J3 League.

The J3 League, the third tier, hosts 16 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to the J2 League, and the bottom two are relegated to the Japan Football League. This tier consists of 16 clubs, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the J3 League and the regional leagues.

Beyond the Japan Football League, the system continues with regional and prefectural divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Japanese football at all levels of competition. These tiers include the Regional Leagues, the Prefectural Leagues and the Municipal Leagues.
