Organisation of Football in Lithuania

The organisation of football in Lithuania is structured according to a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performances. This structure is divided into several levels, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the A Lyga, which is the highest level of Lithuanian football. It comprises 10 professional clubs that compete for the Lithuanian championship title. The bottom two clubs in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the I Lyga, which also includes 16 clubs. The top two from the I Lyga are promoted to the A Lyga, while the bottom three are relegated to the II Lyga.

The II Lyga, the third level of Lithuanian football, is subdivided into several regional groups. The best teams from each group are promoted to the I Lyga, and the least successful are relegated to the III Lyga. This level is also subdivided into several regional groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the II Lyga.

The III Lyga, the fourth level of Lithuanian football, is the last level organised at the national level. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams of professional clubs. Beyond the III Lyga, the system continues with regional divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Lithuanian football at all levels of competition.
