The organisation of football in Portugal is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend in level based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.
At the top of the hierarchy is the Primeira Liga, which is the highest level of Portuguese football. It comprises 18 professional clubs vying for the title of Portuguese champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Liga Portugal 2, which also includes 18 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Primeira Liga, while the bottom two descend to the Campeonato de Portugal.
The Campeonato de Portugal, the third tier, hosts 72 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The best-performing teams are promoted to Liga Portugal 2, and the lowest-ranked teams are relegated to the Distritais. This level is subdivided into several regional groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Campeonato de Portugal and the Divisões Regionais.
The Divisões Regionais, the fifth tier of Portuguese football, are organised into several regional groups. They include amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the Divisões Regionais, the system continues with local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Portuguese football at all levels of competition.
